Feeling more Adventurous?
The Mojave Desert is a big place. Here are some things a little further out than Joshua Tree.
To the North
If you’ve got the time, I really recommend exploring the north! Especially if you like trains or Route 66.
Amboy Crater - This volcanic cinder cone is worth a stop just to see the view from the parking lot. But if it’s not too sunny/hot, you can hike to the top of it and watch trains in the distance. I highly recommend the hike just for that view. It’s never been crowded when I’ve gone. If you’re an REM fan, you might recognize it from the “New Adventures in Hi-Fi” album cover!
Roy’s Motel & Cafe - One of my favorite stops up in Amboy. If you go around sunset, you’ll catch the giant sign being lit up. But go during the day to explore the old motel a bit. A great stop for photographers!
Kelso Dunes - Giant sand dunes in the Mojave National Preserve! If you’re in shape and up for a hard hike/climb through sand, you can climb to the top of them. I highly recommend doing so! It’s worth it.
Roadrunner’s Retreat - Hit this if you’re up by Roy’s or Amboy Crater. It’s currently in the process of being restored. This is one of those “I’m exploring the far reaches of the abandoned Mojave stuff” stops, or maybe you’re a Route 66 fan. You’ll have to drive around a “Road closed ahead” sign to get there.
“The Amboy Dunes Tour” - Self-guided, but here’s our suggestion of an itinerary if you want to explore up north: Take a day to drive to Amboy Crater, check out the view from the parking lot and explore a bit, then stop at Roy’s for a cold drink, Keep on driving to Kelso Dunes, do the hike to the top of the dunes, and then turn around and head back. If you’ve got time, swing by Roadrunner’s Retreat, and then try to time it right to hit Roy’s around sunset to see the sign lit up.
To the South
Palm Springs - Want to go shopping? Eat at fancier restaurants? Antiquing? Palm Springs and other desert cities are where to do it. There’s way too much to cover here, but a day trip to the Low Desert is doable from Green Jackrabbit.
Salton Sea - I hear it’s a weird place. I haven’t made it there yet but a lot of people recommend it.
Desert X - a bi-annual art thing scattered around the desert. Check to see if it’s happening when you’re planning a trip. Some art from previous years is still around too.
To the East
Big Bear Lake - It’s possible to do a day trip to Big Bear Lake and with a short hike. It’s an interesting drive and a good change of scenery. Check out the Eye of God, or a number of trails near Big Bear Lake
To the West
Wonder Valley - Old abandoned homestead cabins, some occupied cabins with people that want to be left alone. Please adventure and explore respectfully!
